Students enrolled in Speech and Language will work primarily on individualized goals. Students may work on developing compensatory strategies for succeeding in college level classes. Some examples of targeted skills include, vocabulary building, comprehension of college text, study skills, and/or breaking down the language of assignments, texts or tests. Students who are pursuing a Certificate of Completion may also work on developing strategies necessary for the work environment. Some areas of focus may be listening, auditory comprehension, expressing oneself, and sequencing tasks or ideas.
In addition to individual speech and language therapy, students may also be enrolled in pragmatic language groups. These groups focus particularly on understanding social communication and developing skills or compensatory strategies for becoming more effective in one's interpersonal communication skills. Group work (pragmatic language) has been shown to be most effective in increasing the understanding and use of social communications. Didactic methods are used to enhance the learning. Students will explore a variety of topics, typically focused on the needs of the individual group.
The speech and language pathologist may also recommend some computer programs designed to increase a student's skill in a particular deficit area.
Some students are recommended for the FastForWord program based on demonstrated areas of need, test data and Speech Language Therapist recommendation. FastFor Word builds a student's fundamental cognitive skills of memory, attention, processing and sequencing in the context of key reading skills such as phonological fluency and language structures. This program is an additional charge of $800.00
For students with specific reading and/or spelling deficits, the SLP may recommend My Reading Coach. This program teaches students fundamental phonological awareness and phonics. It focuses on sound-letter relationship and also provides training in word segmentation and how to blend letters and sounds. The students learn how to decode and encode words and the program makes sure that the skills are mastered and not forgotten through repetition. Students are also taught grammar as a reading comprehension tool. This program is offered at no additional charge.
