Driver's Education

  • Students who wish to pursue obtaining a driver's license in the state of Illinois have the option of doing so while attending the OPTIONS Program. The Evaluation and Developmental Center (EDC) in Carbondale has a long history of teaching driver's education to students with disabilities.  OPTIONS has used their services for various reasons across the years.  The driving instructor has 25 years of experience working with students with various disabilities.  The services EDC offers in terms of driver's education are quite comprehensive.

The driving instructor can conduct a complete evaluation prior to beginning any instruction.  This will include one hour of behind-the-wheel and one hour in the classroom.  The full exam will cover the following areas:
  1. a visual exam
  2. a motor free perceptual test
  3. a selective attention evaluation
  4. a visual perceptual relationship evaluation
  5. a Rules of the Road comprehensive test

The student and family will receive a four to six page report at the conclusion that will include recommendations about the student's driving ability and ability to become licensed.  The cost for the complete evaluation is $500.00.

If your student has a valid driver's permit, he/she can just begin driver's training; however, if the permit is expired or your child still needs to get one, he/she will first need to take the written test at the DMV, which we can facilitate at OPTIONS with the proper documentation.  The cost for one-hour of behind the wheel training is $95.00.
