Our mission statement recognizes that our students are complex individuals. The reference to “complex learning disabilities” indicates that people with learning disabilities are affected across their whole lives and not just in an educational setting.
People with learning disabilities can be affected socially, emotionally, academically, medically, etc. These issues are neurologically based and are life-long, and they impact the entire family system. It is therefore imperative that we not only recognize the issues of complexity, but that we systematically help students to manage those issues by developing life-long strategies and skills to empower them to be happy and live a fulfilling and productive life.
At Brehm, we emphasize that we have a holistic program and we mean it. We focus on social, emotional, medical, and academic issues and teach our students how to manage the systems they need to use to be independent. Our philosophy is to help families, as well as our students, to heal. Together, we must be proactive in preparing for the future.
Parents know in their hearts and through their experiences that a single, simple solution is not the answer for their child. At Brehm, we partner with parents in that recognition and explore all avenues for our students to truly benefit from the implementation of our mission. We work together to prepare students for their path forward.
“Complex” really boils down to acknowledging our students’ and families’ full spectrum of needs, and offering multiple support systems to help students and families heal, grow, and move toward the highest quality of family life, even while realizing the struggles along the way. |
