Community College Experiences

Starting the second semester in the OPTIONS Program, many students are identified to participate in a community college curriculum.  Those students who take classes at John A. Logan Community College will receive support through the OPTIONS Program and will likely participate in other classes and/or Speech and Language Therapy at OPTIONS.  If students participate at JALC, they typically take two to three classes, based upon their skills and maturity levels.  An OPTIONS instructor acts as the JALC liaison.  This instructor and students work closely with JALC academic advisors to help students plan educational goals and select appropriate classes.  Students receive assistance needed at every step of the process, from selecting a curriculum guide and classes, to registration, to participation.  Progress in these classes is monitored minimally every two weeks with written communications between OPTIONS' JALC liaison and JALC instructors.  Students enrolled at the college may also be enrolled in some Job Readiness classes. Similarly, because the goal for each student ultimately is employment, the student may also participate in a career explorations internship to be monitored by the Vocational Counselor.  Career explorations internships will be set up according to student interest and availability.
